Artist Biography: Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was an American sculptor renowned for his pioneering work in kinetic art, particularly his invention of the mobile, a type of moving sculpture powered by motors or air currents. Born in Lawnton, Pennsylvania, Calder studied mechanical engineering before transitioning to art, a background that profoundly influenced his creative process. In the 1930s, Calder introduced his delicate, balanced mobiles, which contrasted with his later, more monumental stationary sculptures known as stabiles. His playful yet sophisticated use of movement and abstraction brought a new dimension to modern sculpture, establishing him as one of the most innovative and influential artists of the 20th century. Calder's work is celebrated for its ingenuity, whimsy, and the dynamic interplay of form and space.
