Al Buell (1910–1996) was an American illustrator and painter best known for his glamorous pin-up art, which became a defining part of mid-20th-century commercial illustration. Born in Hiawatha, Kansas, and raised in Cushing, Oklahoma, Buell studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and established his own Chicago studio by 1940 after working with the Stevens/Hall/Biondi Studio. He produced pin-ups and calendar art for companies including Gerlach-Barklow and Brown & Bigelow, as well as illustrations for major magazines and advertising campaigns, notably Coca-Cola. During and after World War II, his patriotic and glamour imagery helped establish his reputation, and he later contributed to Esquire's Gallery of Glamour and The Saturday Evening Post. Buell continued painting pin-ups into the mid-1960s before retiring from commercial art and turning increasingly to landscapes and portrait commissions; he spent his later years in Florida and died in 1996.
