Al Black (1947-2025) American, Oil on Canvas Florida Highwaymen Landscape Painting. Quintessential Florida Highwayman oil painting featuring a serene coastal scene with a lone fisherman in a boat, iconic leaning palm trees, and wading birds set against a soft, expansive sky. Signed lower right and verso. Framed.

Overall Size: 27 3/4 x 39 1/2 in.

Sight Size: 23 x 35 in.

Al Black (1947-2025) was an American landscape painter and member of the original Florida Highwaymen, a group of self-taught African American artists who, beginning in the 1950s and 1960s, created and sold vibrant scenes of Florida’s natural beauty during the era of segregation. Taught by fellow Highwayman Alfred Hair, Black developed a distinctive style marked by bold colors, dramatic skies, and expressive brushwork depicting palm-lined highways, coastal sunsets, and backcountry vistas. He sold his paintings door-to-door and along roadside routes—an approach that gave the group its name—and later worked outside the art world before returning to painting in the 1990s. Black's work is widely collected as part of an important chapter in Florida’s cultural and artistic history.
