Renato Anatrà was born in Venice, Italy in 1943, and became a pivotal figure in contemporary Murano glass sculpture as co-founder of Arte80 with Andrea Tagliapietra. One of Murano’s most prolific glass sculptors until his retirement in the early 2000s, his works primarily consisted of figural and abstract sculptures made from clear glass with minor coloration or iridescence, differentiating him from the more colorful artists in his generation. His focus on clarity, subtle linework, and sometimes surrealist motifs led to numerous exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, as well as many other museums around the globe. He died in 2020 amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire local artisans and captivate glass art collectors.
