George Stubbs (1724-1806) was an English painter widely regarded as one of the greatest sporting and animal artists of the 18th century. Largely self-taught, Stubbs famously conducted detailed anatomical dissections, which informed the scientific accuracy and naturalism of his paintings. His most famous work, Whistlejacket (1762), exemplifies his masterful ability to capture both the physical power and expressive spirit of the horse. Stubbs's legacy lies in elevating animal portraiture to the level of fine art, blending natural history with aesthetic beauty.
