Fernando Botero Angulo (known primarily by his middle name) was a world-renowned Colombian figurative artist and sculptor celebrated for his unmistakable signature style known as “Boterismo.” Born in Medellín in 1932 and overcoming early rejection from traditional schools, his unique aesthetic depicted people, animals, and everyday objects in proportionally large, exaggerated volumes, using monumental forms to convey both lighthearted humor and sharp political critique. He honed his craft by studying Renaissance masters in Europe and copying their works to support himself, achieving international fame by the 1990s with showcases of his massive bronze sculptures in prominent public spaces worldwide, including New York’s Park Avenue and the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Beyond joyful subjects, he used his global platform to directly confront human suffering, creating powerful, heavy-hearted series that explored Colombian cartel violence and the military abuses at Abu Ghraib prison. Considered the most recognized and quoted artist from Latin America in his lifetime, he donated hundreds of his own masterpieces and private collections to create major museums in Bogotá and his native Medellín before his death, solidifying his legacy.
