Arturo Di Modica (1941-2021) was an Italian sculptor internationally celebrated for creating New York City’s iconic Charging Bull sculpture. Born in Sicily, he ran away to Florence at age 18 to pursue art, eventually earning the nickname “the young Michelangelo” from legendary British sculptor Henry Moore. Frustrated by local artistic constraints, Di Modica moved to New York in 1970, where he became famous for his anti-establishment guerrilla art style. He routinely executed bold public stunts, including illegally dropping monumental sculptures outside Rockefeller Center and delivering a massive bronze horse to Lincoln Center wrapped as a Valentine’s Day gift. His masterpiece, the Charging Bull, was secretly dropped in front of the New York Stock Exchange in 1989 as a self-financed $350,000 gift to symbolize strength following the 1987 stock market crash, and went on to become the unofficial emblem of Wall Street and the financial district. Working mostly outside the formal art market for his entire career, Di Modica spent his final years building a sculpture school in his Sicilian hometown, with many of his pieces selling for millions of dollars since his death.
