The oval ankle bracelet was worn by a witchdoctor in the Central African Republic and made from brass shell casings found after a safari hunt. The bracelet indicated that the witchdoctor had killed someone, and if the witchdoctor wore more than one bracelet on his wrist or ankle, this showed he had killed more than one person, an ominous sign for people who wanted to challenge his powers. The bracelet is 3 in. wide. The small household shield from the Central African Republic was used to attract the God of the Wood to a villager’s hut and show the God that water was ready for him to drink. That gesture was to ensure a successful hunt. The small orange brown piece contained marijuana tobacco, and an antelope’s tail also decorated the shield. The shield measures 15 5/8 in. long and 6 in. wide. The broom was an important household implement in the bush. It is missing the bottom plant whisks, but in its heyday, it was used to clean the outside of a hut, and the cleaner the outside, the more status the people or the woman had who lived there. The broom measures 23 in. long as it is. The hat might have been worn by a village chief or spokesperson and was made from straw or plant fibers, and it measures 11 1/4 in. long and 2 in. high. The fly swatter was simply used to shoo away flies, something you encountered a lot in the bush and rural villages of the Central African Republic. It measures 8 in. long. All from the Dale Baker collection. .
