1900's African Rope and Sleeping Mats

These coiled pieces of rope were made from hemp grown in the CAR and shipped to Europe and other countries around the world. Each coil is strong, sturdy, and supple. The two loops measure about 13 in. long and 11 3/4 in. long and 3/8 in. wide. (We did not unwrap the coils to measure their full lengths. We just measured the height of the coils) The sleeping mats also came from the Central African Republic and were used by villagers when they went ino the bush. They measure about 33 1/2 in. wide and come in different lengths. All from the Dale Baker collection.
