African Ivory Coast Cowrie Shell Cured Wood Dan Zakpai Ge Mask. Cowrie shells encircle a border around the top, and the rounded eyeholes are ringed with white. The downturned mouth indicates the seriousness of the mask and the wearer's task.
Size: 11 x 8 1/4 x 3 3/4 in.
Known as the Runner's mask or Fire Watcher's mask, these pieces are part of an important sect of West African tribes that use them in ceremonies as well as to grant authority to those who travel the region during the Dry Season to warn of improperly started or kept fires. The downturned mouth and wide-open eyes, some of the most visible openings of any mask on the continent, indicates the seriousness of the mask and the wearer's task.
