African Benin Bronze Head Sculpture. The top bears an elaborate headdress, with the open bottom right below the mouth.
Size: 14 x 11 x 6 in.
Benin bronze head sculptures typically represented an Oba (king), and were created by the Edo people of the Kingdom of Benin, located in modern-day Nigeria. They were placed on ancestral altars within the royal palace to honor past rulers, and were typically made using the intricate lost-wax casting technique. The more intricate the piece, the more honorific they were.
