In 1835 Robert Wallace (1815-1892), the son of Scottish immigrant silversmiths, founded R. Wallace & Sons in Wallingford, Connecticut. Having apprenticed for the Meriden Britannia Company, he sought to develop his own brand, first focusing only on spoons. By the time he died his company had roughly 600 employees, and his children had renamed it twice, first to Wallace Brothers Silver Company and finally Wallace Silversmiths. Many of their pieces have wound up in American museums, and after numerous acquisitions in the 20th Century they wound up under the Lifetime Brands umbrella in 2006, which continues to produce their sterling, silverplate, and stainless steel flatware to this day.
