Libbey, Inc., a prominent glass production company, was originally established as the New England Glass Company in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1818. The company produced a wide array of glass objects and was one of the first in the U.S. to use steam power for manufacturing. In 1888, the company relocated to Toledo, Ohio, and was renamed the Libbey Glass Company, a move that helped it flourish by leveraging automated production methods developed by inventor Michael Joseph Owens. After operating for decades as a division of Owens-Illinois, the company was spun off as an independent entity in 1993. Today, Libbey, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of glassware products such as tableware and drinkware, though it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic before successfully emerging later that year.
