(7) Folio Society Books and (1) Heritage Press Book. This lot features seven books by the Folio Society and one by the Heritage Press. The Folio Society books include Grimm’s Fairly Tales, illustrated by Arthur Rackham, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, a child’s favorite; Kenneth Grahame’s Dream Days, Perrault’s Fairy Tales illustrated by Edmund Dulac, Aldous Huxley’s After Many A Summer, The Smith of Smiths by Hesketh Pearson, Einha rd’s The Life of Charlemagne, and the Heritage Press book is Malory’s The Death Of Arthur. They are all classics and come with their own slipcase, except for Perrault’s Fairy Tales.

Grimm’s Fairly Tales is actually titled The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, illustrated by Arthur Rackham, it was translated by Mrs. Edgar Lucas, and it’s the ninth printing by the Folio Society in 2002. The book has gilt lettering and gilt decorations on the spine and front cover, decorated endpapers, 40 color illustrations and 55 black and white illustrations, 325 pages of text, it has a blue topstain, and comes with a matching slipcase. The book measures 10 x 7 1/2 inches wide and is in very good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, bright illustrations, a smidge of rubbing at the heel and crown and at the tips, and the slipcase has light rubbing in a couple of spots and still very solid.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett was first published by William Heinemann in 1911 and the Folio Society version is a third printing from 2007, with a green binding with gilt lettering and black decorations on the spine and front cover, green endpapers, it was illustrated by Charles Robinson, it has 273 pages of text, and it comes with a matching green slipcase. The book measures 9x 6 1/2 inches wide and is in very good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, clean colored illustrations, a slight bump at the heel, and the slipcase is in very good condition, with just light rubbing at the top.
The Kenneth Grahame book is Dream Days, first published in 1898 by John Lane, and this version by the Folio Society was published in 2010, it’s a first edition by the Folio Society because it has matching dates of 2010 on the title page and copyright page, it has blue covers with silver lettering and silver and black decorations on the spine and front cover, pale silver endpapers, it is illustrated by Debra McFarlane, with color illustrations and small black and white vignettes, 173 pages of text, and a pale silver slipcase. The book measures 8 x 5 1/2 inches wide and is in great condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, clean illustrations, and the slipcase is in great condition too. Ken Grahame also wrote Wind in the Willows, a great children’s book which follows the adventures of Mole and Rat and Mr. Toad as they work their way around Wild Wood.
Perrault’s Fairy Tales is called the Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault on the title page, it has gilt lettering and pink, pale blue, and gilt decorations on the spine, fancy pink, pale blue, green and gilt decorations on the front cover, gray endpapers, the title page says it was illustrated by Edmund Dulac, one of the premier illustrators of the early twentieth century, it was published in 1998 by the Folio Society and the copyright page says it is the sixth printing from 2002, it has 185 pages of text, a red topstain, and no slipcase. The book measures 10 x 7 3/4 and is in great condition, with a tight binding, clean pages and text, and clean bright illustrations.
Aldous Huxley’s After Many A Summer tells the story of a Hollywood millionaire who fears his impending death, it was published by the Folio Society in 1980 and is a first edition by the Folio Society because it has matching dates of 1980 on the title page and copyright page, it has gilt lettering on the spine and pale green covers, with a dark green outline of a medieval building on the spine and covers, dark green endpapers, the book has color illustrations by Michael Foreman, 239 pages of text, a blue-green topstain, and a decorated pale gray-green slipcase. The book measures 9 x 6 3/8 and is in great condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, and great illustrations. The slipcase has faint browning on it and doesn’t really detract.
The Smith of Smiths by Hesketh Pearson was first published by Hamish Hamilton in 1934 and the Folio Society edition here is a second impression from 1979. The book has gilt lettering and gilt decorations on a pale blue spine, marbled boards, pale salmon endpapers, an introduction by Malcom Muggeridge, 294 pages of text followed by a short bibliography, and a tan slipcase. The book measures 9 x 6 inches wide and is in very good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, and just corner creases on 194 and 195. The slipcase has wear and light browning on some of the edges.
The Life Of Charlemagne was written by Einhard The Frank and published by the Folio Society in MCMLXX - 1970 - and it’s a first edition by the Folio Society because it has matching dates on the title and copyright pages. The spine and cream-colored boards are illustrated with the gilt letters KRLS, which are the initials of Charlemagne and the consonants of his name in Latin, and the vowels are in a diamond in the middle of his monogram. The mauve endpapers are decorated with the initials KRLS in gilt, the book was translated by Lewis Thorpe, some of the colored illustrations appear to be in a manuscript style, the book has 83 pages of text plus maps and a genealogical table at the rear, and a dark mauve slipcase. The book measures 10 x 6 3/8 inches wide and is in very good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, and beautiful color illustrations, and the slipcase has faded a bit and has light rubbing in a couple of spots, which doesn’t affect the book at all.
The last book in this lot is Le Mort DArthur, the story of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table, written by Sir Thomas Malory in 1485 and published by the Heritage Press in 1955. The book has gilt borders around gilt lettering on the spine, patterned shields on the front and back covers, blank endpapers, the title page, a Preface, 757 pages of text, a blue topstain, and blue slipcase. The book measures 11 x 7 1/2 inches wide and is in very good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, and the slipcase its in very good condition too, with just faint rubbing on the bottom, where it can’t be seen.
