Oneida Limited originated from the utopian Oneida Community in New York, transitioning into a joint-stock company in 1880 and beginning silver-plated flatware production in 1899. The company, which changed its name to Oneida Ltd. in 1935, focused heavily on effective marketing and advertising to become a household name. A pivotal shift occurred in 1961 when Oneida moved into stainless steel production, a decision that cemented its dominance in the U.S. flatware market by the 1980s. However, economic challenges and international instability led to the sale of assets and the company going private in the early 2000s. Oneida no longer manufactures in the United States and has since passed through various corporate holdings.
