W. S. Tyler, originally the Cleveland Wire Works, was founded in 1872 by Washington S. Tyler after finishing school in Connecticut and returning to his hometown in Ohio to work at E. I. Baldwin & Company. His development of an innovative “double crimping” technique quickly led to him striking out on his own, with the Cleveland Wire Works changing its name in 1889, by which time it was responsible for making most of the wire screens, screen machinery, elevator entrances, elevator cares, wire cloth, trellises, and copper, brass, steel, and iron arches in the city. Its revolutionary testing sieve was selected by the United States government as the standard for particle analysis in 1910, leading them to national prominence and expansion even after Tyler’s death in 1917, with over 1,100 employees at the height of its popularity. A joint venture with Haver & Boecker in Germany in 1958 established W. S. Tyler International, but economic difficulties and new competition led to the headquarters being disbanded in 1970, with divisions sold off or moved to new locations. The main Screening Division moved to Mentor, Ohio, in 1994, fully acquired four years later by Haver & Boecker, and today the company retains the W. S. Tyler name and continues to produce mesh and industrial products for industrial and scientific companies throughout the world.
