Nesting tables (and other types of furniture) have been found in ancient tombs in Egypt, South America, and China. From an economic standpoint, these arrangements are ideal for small spaces, commonly serving multiple functions throughout the day, depending on the number of people using them. From a philosophical standpoint, the idea of items with exponentially increasing sizes fitting together has many ancient and modern iterations, like the Matryoshka nesting dolls. Used metaphorically, as a design paradigm, it denotes a recognizable relationship of “object-within-similar-object” that appeals to the desire for symmetry and patterns in the human brain, sometimes known as the “onion metaphor” for the numerous repeating layers found within the plant.
Commensurate with age.
