17th Century Chinese Carved Wood Woman's Chair. A very well proportioned and decorative woman's chair, similar in form to the official's hat armchair, with an elegantly curved back railing and back splat, solid wood seat, curved armrests, and rectangular legs tapering to finely curved horseshoe feet. Extensively carved with many auspicious Taoist and Buddhist symbols: On the back splat, a central medallion with raised carvings of the famous warrior, Han Zin, at battle, upper panel of incised geometric carvings within a circle and surrounded by abstract or archaic bats (prosperity), lower panels of lotus flowers (purity), the ruyi (prosperity, symbol of Buddha), and double peaches spandrels on the upper rails (longevity) perforated carvings below of lotus flowers and floral scrolls. Original black, red lacquer with slight gold gilding.
