Time is an American news magazine based in New York City that made history as the first weekly news magazine in the United States upon its launch on March 3rd, 1923. Founded by Yale University graduates Briton Hadden and Henry Luce, the publication initially emphasized absolute brevity, adopting the early marketing slogan “Take Time - It’s Brief.” The magazine famously built its reputation around profiling prominent figures, implementing a strict policy until the late 1960s where its iconic cover exclusively depicted a single person. Over nearly a century of operation, its reach expanded globally through regional offices in London, Hong Kong, and Sydney, alongside the introduction of Time France in 2025. Following a transition from its long-standing weekly schedule to biweekly distribution in 2020, the magazine dropped its online paywall to pivot toward business-to-business media revenues. Today the brand is owned by Salesforce founder Marc Benioff, who purchased the media property in 2018 for $190 million to operate it under Time USA, LLC, and despite their declining distribution in the 21st Century their most famous feature, the annual “Person of the Year” cover (formerly “Man of the Year”), remains one of the most coveted (and often controversial) distinctions in media.
