Founded in 1968 by Clay Felker and Milton Glaser, New York Magazine began as a brasher, city-focused weekly competitor to The New Yorker. The publication quickly became a cradle for New Journalism, featuring prominent writers like Tom Wolfe, Jimmy Breslin, and Gloria Steinem, as well as puzzles and poetry contributed by Stephen Sondheim, Richard Maltby, Jr., David Mamet, and more. Over the decades, it expanded into a national powerhouse celebrated for its politics, arts, and lifestyle reporting, eventually shifting to a biweekly print schedule in 2014. Under the leadership of editor Adam Moss in the 2000s, the magazine successfully transitioned into the digital age by launching popular verticals like Vulture, The Cut, and Intelligencer. Its editorial excellence has been recognized with numerous National Magazine Awards and two Pulitzer Prizes for Criticism. After being acquired by Vox Media in 2019, the magazine was sold to James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems in 2026.
Founded in 1888 as a scholarly journal, National Geographic evolved into a world-renowned monthly magazine famous for its photojournalism and iconic yellow border. The publication has traditionally focused its feature articles on geography, history, nature, science, and global cultures, as well as maps and retrospectives, but occasionally delved into politics and even coverage of wars when it affected humanitarian and environmental issues. Ownership shifted from the National Geographic Society to National Geographic Partners in 2015, with the Walt Disney Company ultimately acquiring a controlling interest in 2019. Facing the broader decline of print media, the magazine laid off its remaining staff writers in 2023 and transitioned exclusively to freelance contributors and digital formats. Reflecting this shift, U.S. newsstand sales were completely discontinued in 2024, restricting domestic access to subscribers only. Despite global circulation dropping from a 1980s peak of 12 million to roughly 1.65 million in 2024, the brand maintains a massive digital footprint and an unparalleled legacy.
