Tomikichirō Tokuriki (徳力富吉郎, March 22, 1902 – March 1, 2000) was a Japanese printmaker and painter from Kyoto, widely celebrated for bridging two major 20th-century woodblock movements: shin-hanga (new prints) and sōsaku-hanga (creative prints). Born into a long lineage of artisans officially associated with the Honganji Temple, he studied both Western-influenced painting (Yōga) and traditional Japanese painting (Nihonga) before turning to woodblock printing in 1929. Influenced by Hiratsuka Un’ichi, he joined early print publications and became a leading advocate for the creative print movement in Kyoto. Tokuriki carved and often printed his own works, blending bold compositions with Fauvist-inspired color, while also producing commercial series for major Kyoto publishers such as Uchida and Unsōdō, including Thirty Views of Kyoto, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, and Scenes of Sacred Historic Landmarks. After World War II, he founded his own publishing company, Matsukyū (with its imprint Kōrokusha), taught printmaking to Japanese and international students, and exhibited widely in Japan, Europe, and the United States. His work is held in major museum collections and he remains one of Kyoto’s most influential modern printmakers.
