Born on March 22, 1902 in Kyoto into a long-established artisan family associated with the Honganji Temple, Tokuriki Tomikichirō trained in both Western-style (Yōga) and traditional Japanese (Nihonga) painting before turning to woodblock prints around 1924. Influenced by Hiratsuka Un’ichi and others, he emerged as a leader of the Kyoto-based Sōsaku Hanga ("creative print") movement, fully embracing self-carved and self-printed works. Simultaneously, he produced commercial Shin Hanga ("new prints") landscapes for Kyoto publishing houses like Uchida and Unsōdō. In 1932 he co-founded the magazine Taishū Hanga, and after World War II established his own publishing firm, Matsukyū (and later Kōrokusha), to publish both his works and those of fellow artisans. His print series—including Thirty Views of Kyoto, Scenes of Sacred Places, and Twelve Months in Kyoto—reflect a vivid blend of traditional subjects, bold line work, and modern sensibility. Tokuriki remained a respected educator and prolific printmaker throughout his life, teaching artisans (including many non-Japanese) and writing extensively on print techniques until his death on March 1, 2000.
