19th Century Chromolithograph Holy Cards. Group of twelve cards depicting Christian saints. Framed.

Nineteenth-century holy cards were small, devotional prints featuring religious imagery—typically saints, the Virgin Mary, or scenes from the life of Christ—often accompanied by prayers or scripture. Mass-produced thanks to advancements in chromolithography and engraving, these cards became widely accessible, especially among Catholic communities, serving as affordable tokens of faith, remembrance, and inspiration. While earlier examples were hand-colored and reserved for the wealthy, 19th-century holy cards were distributed in churches, given at sacraments like First Communion, or kept in prayer books. Their intricate designs, lace-like borders, and vivid imagery reflect both the period's deep religious sentiment and the era’s growing use of printed ephemera as personal devotional objects.
