The Curta mechanical calculator is a remarkably compact, hand-cranked calculating device invented by Curt Herzstark in the mid-20th century, capable of performing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with impressive precision. Shaped like a small cylinder that fits in the palm of the hand, the Curta used a sophisticated stepped drum mechanism—derived from the Leibniz wheel—to execute calculations through the rotation of a top crank. First produced in 1948, it became popular among engineers, surveyors, and rally drivers for its portability and reliability, especially before electronic calculators became widespread. Often nicknamed the “pepper grinder” due to its appearance, the Curta is now celebrated as a masterpiece of mechanical engineering and a prized collectible.
