The Hazel-Atlas Glass Company, a large producer of machine-molded glass containers, was formed in 1902 through the merger of four companies and headquartered in Wheeling, West Virginia. By the mid 20th Century it operated 15 plants across the United States and became the third-largest producer of glass containers in the country. The company was particularly known for its extensive range of “Depression” pressed glassware patterns and the popular “Atlas” brand home canning jars. In 1957 Hazel-Atlas became a subsidiary of the Continental Can Company, an acquisition that faced a legal challenge under the Clayton Antitrust Act. The company’s operations continued until 1964, when most of its plants were sold to Brockway Glass Company, and today its products are still sought by collectors.
