Shreve, Crump & Low is a Massachusetts-based company that now makes diamonds, gemstones, watches, crystal, and jewelry, as well as their own giftware and home goods collection. The original founder of the business was John McFarlane, who set up a watchmaker’s shop in Salem in 1796 that was bought out by Jabez Baldwin in the early 1800s and moved to Boston, renamed Baldwin & Jones. Two apprentices named John J. Low and Edward Putnam took over in 1822 and renamed the business after themselves, with Low and his descendants eventually joining with Benjamin Shreve in 1852 and Charles H. Crump in 1869 to form a new company, formally incorporated into its modern name in 1888. Although they were never silversmiths, they were one of the primary purveyors of silver goods in the area, eventually opening a branch in Greenwich, Connecticut and remaining family-owned to this day.
