O. & E. G. Royal Austria refers to porcelain made by the factory of Oscar and Edgar Gutherz, known for producing fine porcelain, particularly in the early 1900s, and can be found as decorative plates, bowls, or serving dishes. The hallmark was often printed in green with the word “Royal” inside the wreath, the word “Austria” below the wreath, and the initials “O&EG” above the wreath. Oscar and Edgar Gutherz of Altrolau, Bohemia (now Stara Role, Czech Republic) opened the business in 1884 and ran it until 1918, using financial backing from the American importer Lazarus Straus & Sons. The company expanded from simple decoration into full-blown porcelain production in 1898, the year the brothers bought out all other investors and restructured the company. In the wake of massive political and cultural shifts at the end of World War I, the company became insolvent, and their styles were frequently imitated by other Germany manufacturers in the following decades.
