Zamy Steynovitz (1951-2000) was an Israeli painter born in Liegnitz, Poland, whose family immigrated to Israel in 1957. He studied at the Art School in Tel Aviv and the Royal Academy of Arts in London, developing a modernist, abstract style reflecting his Jewish and Eastern European heritage. His first solo exhibition came in 1966, and over the next three decades he became internationally renowned, creating works that included Paris cityscapes, floral still lifes, angels, circuses, and idealized female figures. Early works utilized pastels, ink, and watercolors, while travels in South America during the 1980s brought new colors and themes to his paintings. Maintaining studios in New York and Tel Aviv in the 1990s, he was represented by major galleries worldwide, including Park West, and collected by celebrities, politicians, and religious leaders. Steynovitz passed away from a rare form of cancer on September 1, 2000, remaining one of the most sought-after modern Jewish artists of his generation.
