Zamy Steynovitz was born in Liegnitz, Poland on January 15th, 1951. His family immigrated to Israel in 1957, by which time he was already exploring his artistic interests in earnest. Developing an affinity for modernist, abstract paintings that reflected his Jewish and Eastern European heritage, he studied first at the Art School in Tel Aviv and later the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He had his first solo exhibition in 1966, and quickly rose to be one of the most popular Israeli artists in the world. His diverse subject matter over the next thirty years featured Paris cityscapes, floral still lifes, angels, circuses, and much more, but usually incorporated idealized female figures. In the early stages of his work he used rich pastels, ink, watercolors and light brush strokes, but in the 1980s he spent considerable time in South America, which infused his works with a new color palette and series of themes. In the 1990s he maintained a studio in New York City and in Tel Aviv, and was represented by major galleries around the world, including Park West. Celebrities, politicians, and religious leaders collected his works, and when he passed away after swiftly succumbing to a rare form of cancer on September 1st, 2000 he was still one of the most sought after modern Jewish artists of his generation.
