Yaacov Agam (born 1928) is an Israeli artist and a pioneer of kinetic and optical art, renowned for his innovative use of movement, color, and viewer interaction. Born Yaacov Gipstein in Rishon LeZion, Israel, he studied art in Jerusalem and later in Paris, where he became associated with the avant-garde movement and developed his distinctive approach to transforming static images into dynamic visual experiences. Agam is best known for his “Agamographs,” works that change appearance as the viewer moves, as well as his exploration of three-dimensional forms, sculpture, architecture, and public art. His creations often incorporate themes of change, perception, and spirituality, reflecting his interest in how art can transcend fixed perspectives. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, Agam has exhibited internationally, created major public installations, and earned recognition as one of the leading figures in modern interactive and kinetic art.
