Chanel is a French luxury fashion house founded in 1910 by Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel 1883-1971) in Paris. Perhaps no other woman in fashion history has had a bigger impact on the evolution of feminine style and design, with her sporty, casual chic looks rapidly taking hold after World War I. Her couture house closed in 1939 when World War II broke out, and she stayed in occupied France, working with the Vichy puppet regime and trying to use her close friendship with Winston Churchill to end the war swiftly in favor of the Germans. She spent nearly a decade in self-imposed exile after the war in Switzerland before returning to Paris in 1954 to revive her brand. Although the French were slow to embrace her, the American and British markets took to her immediately, and her career was at its zenith when she passed in 1971, leaving the company in the hands of Yvonne Dudel, Jean Cazaubon, and Philippe Guibourge. After many changes in control over the next half century, it is now privately owned by French brothers Alain and Gérard Wertheimer, through the holding company Chanel Limited, established in 2018 and headquartered in London. To this day Chanel specializes in women’s ready-to-wear, luxury goods, and accessories. Chanel is best known for its No. 5 perfume and Chanel Suit (as well as the ubiquitous “little black dress”), and is credited for revolutionizing haute couture and ready-to-wear by replacing structured, corseted silhouettes with more functional garments that women still find flattering over a century later.
