William Watson Jr. (1847-1921) was born in Islington and became a pupil of Edwin Henry Landseer and Rosa Bonheur. Victorian upper and middle class patrons who fled the fog of London for the Scottish Highlands commissioned artists like him to paint landscapes to fill their newly built villas and country estates. He excelled at Highland vistas filled with sheep and cattle on rugged mountains, surrounded by the swirling mists of the glens. His exhibition at the Royal Academy in the late 1860s was highly regarded, and his works can be found today in museums in the United States as well as the United Kingdom.
