William Posey Silva (1859–1948) was an American landscape painter known for his atmospheric, lyrical Impressionist style and his evocative depictions of the American South and California coast. Born in Savannah, Georgia, Silva initially pursued engineering and later managed his family’s successful china business before turning to art professionally in middle age. He studied in Paris at the Académie Julian under Jean-Paul Laurens and Henri Royer and also worked with the American landscape painter Chauncey Ryder. After returning to the United States, Silva eventually settled in Carmel, California, where he became an important member of the emerging art colony and painted cypress trees, dunes, coastal scenes, gardens, and misty landscapes. His sensitive handling of light, color, and atmosphere earned him numerous awards and recognition during his lifetime, and his paintings are now held in collections including the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Gibbes Museum of Art, and the Johnson Collection.
