This painting by William Jurian Kaula is titled "Sunset in Normandy". Kaula was a New England artist who was born and died in Boston and became one of the leading landscape painters of the Boston School. He studied in Boston and Paris before setting up studios in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and he was celebrated for his Impressionist landscapes of New England. He studied under Edmund Tarbell and did numerous plein-air landscapes before 1925. As his career progressed, his paintings became more Expressionist, with less brushstrokes, cool colors, and dramatic cloud formation. Signed in small black letters in the lower left. He also married in 1902 and maintained a home and studio near the Fenway area of Boston, and a paper label on the back reads "William J Kaula, Address 311 Fenway Studios Boston". The overall size is 17 1/2 x 20 in. wide and the sight size is
9 1/2 x 12 1/2 in. wide.
