William DeShazo (1934 – 2022) was an American luminist landscape and seascape painter born in New Mexico who developed a distinctive style of oil painting celebrated for its luminous light, rich glazing, and evocative portrayals of ocean and coastal scenes. Growing up sketching the rugged landscapes of New Mexico and Arizona and later working as a bronc and bull rider, he eventually moved to Southern California where his experience at sea as a commercial fisherman deepened his connection to maritime subjects; he studied traditional glazing techniques at the Laguna School of Fine Art and went on to build an international reputation with works featured in publications such as Life, Sports Illustrated, Architectural Digest and Arizona Highways and exhibited in galleries across the United States, England, Japan and Europe. His celebrated seascapes, including the famed Pacific Dreams, have hung in collections worldwide and reflect his mastery of light, color and atmosphere, blending technical finesse with a deep affinity for nature’s elemental beauty.
