Willem Johannes Martens was a genre painter born in August 1838 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. His parents sent him to study under the Dutch history painter Nicolaas Pieneman (1809-1860). After completing his artistic education he began exhibiting his work in his home city, as well as The Hague, Arnhem, Rotterdam, and Leeuwarden. His work was displayed in the Munich Glass Palace, which led him to travel Europe, eventually dividing his time between Holland and Rome until 1887. His stunning Italian genre paintings allowed him to become a member of the Society of Amateurs and Connoisseurs of Fine Arts. He moved to Berlin in 1892 and spent the final three years of his life there, acknowledged in his own lifetime for his contributions to the later Realist movement.
