Wilhelm “Willi” Josef Soukop was born in Vienna, Austria in January 1907. In 1919 his father, who had been wounded in World War I, committed suicide, and he worked as an apprentice engraver and ivory carver to help his family make ends meet. He went to study at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna where he met Dorothy Elmhirst, who invited him to work at her home in Devon, England in 1934. Encountering other European exiles like Michael Chekhov and David Leach, who taught him the art of pottery, he received his first solo exhibition at Storran Gallery in 1938. He married the French dancer Simone Moser and taught at the Bromley School of Art during World War II before becoming a fixture at the Royal Academy from 1969 to 1982. His works are on display at the Academy and in the Tate Gallery collections. He died in Glasgow, Scotland in February 1995.
