Wilfred Labiosa (1937–2015) was a Puerto Rican-American artist born in Harlem, New York, to Puerto Rican parents, who developed a broad practice over more than five decades spanning painting, silk-screen, sculpture, ceramics, fine china, and textile design. Educated at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the School of American Arts in New York, then at the Inter American University in Puerto Rico, he moved to Old San Juan in the late 1960s and founded Galería W. Labiosa, a key institution in Puerto Rican art. His work combines urban influences (from New York) with vivid depictions of Puerto Rican landscapes, Old San Juan scenes, and an expressive, abstract series called Impulsivismo. Labiosa also taught for many years, designed for commercial media (album/book covers, ads, animation), and exhibited internationally; his legacy is maintained by his gallery, students, and public retrospectives.
