The California Zephyr is a long-distance passenger train operated by Amtrak, running between Chicago, Illinois, and Emeryville, California. First introduced in 1949 by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Denver & Rio Grande Western, and Western Pacific railroads, it became famous for its scenic route through the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. The train was discontinued in 1970 but revived by Amtrak in 1983, continuing to offer one of the most picturesque rail journeys in the United States. It covers approximately 2,438 miles over about 51 hours, passing through seven states and offering breathtaking views of canyons, deserts, and mountain ranges.
