Wayne Cooper was born in 1942 near Depew, Oklahoma, a descendant of the Yuchi tribe that was relocated to what was then Indian Territory in the 1830s. His upbringing in Oklahoma and his ancestral history became primary subjects in his Western Art over the years, and he first began experimenting with oil on canvas under Woody Crumbo, a celebrated Potawatomi artist and educator who taught at Bacone College. His professional career began in the early 1960s, after his studies with the Famous Artists School correspondence courses brought him national attention. He furthered his education at the Gary Artist League of Gary, Indiana and at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, and began exploring printmaking and serigraphy in the 1980s at the American Atelier in New York City. Cooper’s body of work has come to include watercolors, charcoals, pencil, and bronze sculpture, as well as many lithographic series. His pieces can be found in public and private collections across the country, with many notable works gracing the capitol buildings of several states throughout the Southeast and Midwest.
