Cubism was a revolutionary art movement that emerged in the early 20th century, pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. It marked a radical departure from traditional perspective and representation, instead depicting subjects from multiple angles simultaneously to capture a more complete essence of form. Cubism deconstructed objects into geometric shapes and reassembled them in abstract compositions, often reducing the color palette to muted tones to emphasize structure over illusion. The movement evolved in two main phases—Analytic Cubism, which focused on breaking down objects, and Synthetic Cubism, which introduced collage and simpler forms.
