The title page reads An Address In Latin, By Joseph Willard. S.T.D. L.L.D. President; And A Discourse In English, By David Tappan, S.T.D. Hollis Professor Of Divinity; Delivered Before The University In Cambridge, Feb. 21, 1800. In Solemn Observation Of General Washington. E. Typis. Samuel Etheridge. MDCCC [1800]. This was written to honor the life of George Washington after he died. A first edition in the original green wrappers, with the original string binding, it is 44 pages long, including the preface, with three lines of Errata on the last page, the wrappers are 8vo. and measure 8 7/8 x 5 1/4 in. wide, and it is inscribed “Rev. Wm. Mason [illegible]” at the top of the title page, the binding is tight, with occasional foxing and browning in the margins. Willard was the President of Harvard and Tappan was a Professor of Divinity at the university. George Washington died on Dec. 14, 1799, two months before this Address was published, and the Address was clearly a speech written to honor Washington after his death. See Sabin 10454. There are numerous ebook and microfilm copies in Special Collections around the country, according to WorldCat, but this would be only the fourth known original copy printed by Etheridge. #1632 #29
