Artist Biography:
Walter J. Phillips (1884–1963) was a Canadian artist and printmaker known for his mastery of woodblock printing and watercolor painting. Born in England, Phillips emigrated to Canada in 1913, where he became renowned for his vivid landscapes that captured the natural beauty of Canada’s lakes, forests, and prairies. His work was characterized by a harmonious blend of Japanese woodcut techniques with Western artistic traditions, resulting in delicate, refined compositions. Phillips' prints often depicted serene scenes of nature, including views of the Canadian Rockies and Lake of the Woods, and he is regarded as one of Canada's most significant printmakers. His influence on Canadian art and his contributions to woodcut printmaking are widely celebrated.
