Walter Geffcken (1872–1950) was a German painter born in Hamburg, celebrated for his elegant genre scenes, Rococo-inspired compositions, portraits, landscapes, and finely detailed interior paintings. He studied at Heinrich Knirr’s art school in Munich from 1889 to 1891 before continuing his training at the prestigious Académie Julian in Paris, where he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant. After spending an extended period in Italy, Geffcken settled in Munich, where he became active in the artistic community and contributed to the influential art and cultural magazine Jugend. His paintings frequently depict aristocratic gatherings, fashionable figures, and refined social settings, reflecting his interest in historical elegance, decorative detail, and the charm of eighteenth-century European life. He exhibited regularly at Munich’s Glaspalast and was associated with the Luitpold Group and other German artists’ organizations. Today, his works are represented in collections in several German cities, including Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, and Nuremberg.
