Clyde Burnett lived much of his life in Atlanta, Georgia, graduating from University of Georgia in 1951 with a fine arts degree. His work included illustration and advertising design; he was an art critic for the Atlanta Journal when he encountered a painting by Max Ernst at the High Museum that transformed his own art work. His paintings, once figurative, became increasingly abstract. They have been described as postcards from his private dream world. An exhibition titled "Southern Gothic: Paintings by W. Clyde Burnett" was mounted in 2012 at The Federal Building in Sarasota, FL.
