Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames were an American married couple who were highly influential industrial designers, architects, and filmmakers. Charles, born in St. Louis, initially studied architecture but left to pursue his own design interests, and met Ray, a painter from California and a founding member of the American Abstract Artists, while she studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where he was an instructor. After their marriage in 1941 they moved to Los Angeles and established the Eames Office, which became a hub for modern design, and during World War II they developed a plywood leg splint for the U.S. Navy, the success of which funded their subsequent work in furniture design. The Eameses are best known for their functional, low-cost designs, particularly the Eames Lounge Chair from 1956 and their influential architectural work including The Eames House. Their collaborative philosophy of "learning by doing" and their emphasis on lightweight materials and functionality, coupled with over 100 short experimental films they produced, have made them remembered as one of the most significant design couples in history.
