Vintage West German Painted Ceramic Rumtopf Jar. Painted German ceramic rumtopf with red ground and molded relief of fruits such as grapes or pears.

The German Rumtopf, meaning “rum pot,” is a traditional stoneware vessel used to preserve seasonal fruits in a mixture of sugar and high-proof rum, creating a boozy, aromatic compote enjoyed during the winter holidays. Typically large, lidded, and often decorated with folkloric motifs or the word “Rumtopf” in bold relief, these pots are as decorative as they are functional. Starting in spring or summer, layers of fresh fruit—strawberries, cherries, plums, pears—are added as they ripen, soaking for months to develop a rich, spiced flavor. By Christmas, the Rumtopf becomes a festive indulgence, spooned over cake or ice cream, steeped in tradition and warmth.
