The Kuna (also known as Guna or Cuna) are an indigenous people primarily residing in three autonomous comarcas (reservations) in Panama, most notably the San Blas Islands, with a population of about 50,000. Known for their vibrant, handcrafted textile art called molas as well as wooden carvings, they maintain a matriarchal society and a strong, independent culture with self-governance. Their “country-within-a-country” status was secured in 1925, after having originally fled the area now known as Colombia to escape the Spanish conquistadors.
