The Koransha Porcelain Company is a historic Japanese ceramic manufacturer headquartered in Arita, Saga Prefecture, tracing its roots back to 1689 when Eizaemon Fukagawa first began porcelain production. In 1875 the eighth-generation Fukagawa clan united local potters, decorators, and merchants to establish Koransha (“Company of Aromatic Orchids”), which was officially incorporated as one of Kyushu’s first modern enterprises in 1879. Early financial stability and innovation came from manufacturing Japan’s first porcelain electrical insulators for telegraph lines, which funded their artistic endeavors. The company achieved global acclaim during the Meiji era by winning top honors at international World’s Fairs in Philadelphia and Paris for its exquisite Arita ware. Recognized for its translucent white porcelain, signature lapis blue glazes, and elegant hand-painted orchid motifs, Koransha was appointed an official purveyor to the Japanese Imperial Household Ministry in 1896. Today, Koransha continues to blend centuries-old craftsmanship with modern design, producing fine art ceramics, daily tableware, and high-tech industrial ceramics.
