Vintage Japanese Bamboo and Leather-Bound Shakuhachi Flute.

Size: 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 23 in.

The shakuhachi is a Japanese end-blown bamboo flute known for its breathy, meditative sound and deep connection to Zen Buddhist practice. Traditionally made from the root end of a single piece of bamboo, it produces tones that are less about precise notes and more about nuance—air, silence, and subtle shifts in pitch that feel like weather passing through sound. In the Edo period, wandering Zen monks called komusō played the shakuhachi as a form of meditation, using music not to perform but to dissolve the self into breath and tone. Today, the instrument appears in classical ensembles, folk music, and contemporary experimental work, always carrying that same sense of stillness and spaciousness, like sound carved directly out of quiet.
